Christopher Scarpa provides federal, state and local tax advice for limited liability companies, partnerships, corporations, investment companies, tax-exempt organizations and individuals. Mr. Scarpa counsels clients on the tax aspects of mergers, acquisitions, restructurings, liquidations and financing transactions.
His other practice areas include real estate transactions and syndications; representing individuals and businesses in connection with federal, state and local tax controversies; and tax planning in connection with multi-state business activities. Mr. Scarpa rounds out his practice in dealing with tax-exempt organizations, such as the formation of health care entities, applying for and maintaining tax-exempt status for nonprofit corporations, counseling on private inurement and private benefit concerns and planning for unrelated business taxable income.
Some of Mr. Scarpa's career highlights include:
- saving an individual more than $1.5 million in tax and penalties in a federal tax controversy
- providing tax advice on the formation of an ambulatory surgical center joint venture between a tax-exempt hospital and doctors
- saving a corporation in excess of $300,000 in tax and penalties in a sales tax controversy
- counseling on the restructuring of a multi-state business operation prior to initial public offering
- providing tax advice on the rehabilitation of historic buildings, which yielded tax credits in excess of $1.5 million and $1.8 million
- presenting to senior management of a large regional bank on the new markets tax credit
