Keith Dutill is a trial lawyer focused on complex commercial, securities and intellectual property disputes. His current engagements include representing the interests of mutual funds in claims relating to auction rate preferred share redemptions, defending investors victimized by a Philadelphia Ponzi scheme, representing seven mutual fund families in the Tribune bankruptcy litigation, and defending a Swiss electronics company against patent infringement claims relating to transistor design in high-speed logic circuits. In 2012, he served as co-counsel to the plaintiff in a patent infringement trial related to the genetic cause of Alzheimer’s Disease, and successfully prosecuted the claims of a trustee for institutional investors damaged by the $1 billion fraud at India’s Satyam Computer Services. Additionally, within the last five years, he successfully defended a Fortune 500 company against a claim for $550 million, prevailing on summary judgment, and, as lead counsel for a Court appointed Receiver, recovered $75 million for defrauded institutional investors following the collapse of a Cayman Islands hedge fund.

Mr. Dutill has tried more than 50 cases to verdict or final award. He has successfully defended both public and private companies in jury trials involving claims ranging from antitrust violations to theft of trade secrets. When his business clients have sued as plaintiffs, he has won verdicts or settlements in excess of $1 million on six separate occasions, recovering more than $100 million in the aggregate for his clients. His wins include the largest punitive damage jury verdict ever in a business case in one suburban Philadelphia county, as well as the complete exoneration of a broker dealer following a federal jury trial and appeal in a collective action securities fraud case. Mr. Dutill has defended independent directors in Louisiana, pursued the claims of investors and entrepreneurs in South Carolina, Florida and Texas and successfully represented the interests of businesses of all sizes in the state and federal courts of Pennsylvania. He has also defended clients in the securities and mutual fund industries before government agencies and self-regulatory organizations.

Mr. Dutill is an elected Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. Every year since 2008, he has been included in the editions of The Best Lawyers in America, regarded as a definitive guide to legal excellence in the United States. Selection for Best Lawyers is based on a peer-review survey in which more than 1.8 million individual evaluations are reviewed.  Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business has identified him as a leader in commercial litigation in Pennsylvania and as “particularly well-known for his work in the financial services arena.” Mr. Dutill has been named a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer® by Philadelphia Magazine every year since it began its survey in 2004. He was also recognized as a preeminent AV-rated attorney by Martindale-Hubbell.

Mr. Dutill co-chaired the Trial Practice Committee of the American Bar Association (ABA) Section of Litigation from 1997 to 2000 and co-chaired the ABA Committee responsible for national training programs for trial lawyers in 2001. He has taught trial advocacy skills to lawyers in seminars and workshops in cities across the country. In 2007, he was elected as a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation.

Stradley Ronon has been Mr. Dutill’s professional home for his entire career. He served as managing partner of the Malvern office for 10 years and served two terms on the firm’s board of directors.

Mr. Dutill lives in Valley Forge, Pa. with his wife and three daughters.
