Jeff Lutsky has served as Stradley Ronon’s managing partner since January 2005. In this role, he leads the firm’s Strategic Planning Committee and is responsible for articulating and implementing the strategic vision and direction of the firm. Mr. Lutsky’s principal areas of focus include client service initiatives, supervision of department chairs and practice group leaders, oversight of the firm’s regional offices, recruitment of lateral partners and attorney groups, the development of Stradley lawyers and professional staff, technology planning and diversity initiatives.
Mr. Lutsky has substantial trial experience and his practice emphasizes representation of firm clients in significant litigation matters, as opposed to a specific substantive area or industry.
He has litigated a wide range of complex commercial, criminal, and products liability and mass tort cases. He routinely represents corporate, institutional and insurance company clients in merger and acquisition disputes; health care disputes; employment disputes; ERISA claims; shareholder, partnership and derivative claims; class actions; products liability and wrongful death cases; and business torts. He also regularly represents clients, especially in regulated industries, who are targets, subjects or witnesses in federal grand jury proceedings.
Mr. Lutsky has received recognition from several leading trial societies and peer review organizations. He is a Fellow in the Litigation Counsel of America (LCA), an honorary society for trial lawyers. LCA Fellows comprise less than one-half of one percent of American lawyers, and are selected based on superior ethical reputation and excellent achievement at the trial and appellate levels. Mr. Lutsky is also a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, which admits membership to top jury trial lawyers by invitation only. Chambers USA has named Mr. Lutsky as one of America’s Leading Lawyers for Business. He is also named in the 2012 and 2011 editions of the The Best Lawyers in America. From its inception in 2004 through the present, Mr. Lutsky has been named a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer® by a vote of his peers. He was also recognized as a preeminent AV-rated attorney by Martindale-Hubbell.
Mr. Lutsky has tried to judgment, verdict or award more than 70 trials and arbitrations, including:
- a defense judgment for a public company defendant in a securities fraud 10b-5 trial
- an $8 million jury verdict, following a five-week federal court trial, for a local health care distributor of high-tech medical equipment against a Fortune 500 company for breach of contract, interference with contractual relations and punitive damages
- a $6.6 million arbitration award for a national engineering firm against the City of Scranton and a neighboring borough, arising out of a termination of a privatization agreement for sewer and water services
- a complete defense award, including reimbursement of all attorneys’ fees and costs, for a selling shareholder wrongfully accused of fraud and breach of contract in connection with the sale of an electrical contracting company in New York City
- several significant and widely publicized Orphans’ Court trials, hearings and appeals for a charitable trust regarding the finances, administration and operation of The Barnes Foundation
- a nominal settlement payment by a manufacturer of industrial equipment, alleged to have caused permanent and disabling brain injuries to the plaintiff, which followed conclusion of a two-week jury trial
- an award of more than $5 million in favor of two health system clients in a joint venture dispute with another health system
- an award of $1.67 million, plus payment of attorneys’ fees and costs, and denial of defendant’s counterclaim of $1.5 million, in a construction-related contract dispute between former joint- venture partners
Recently, Mr. Lutsky was selected by the Philadelphia Commerce Program to serve as a special master in a billion-dollar controversy brought by a trustee in bankruptcy on behalf of thousands of creditors of a bankrupt mortgage-lending firm against its former officers and directors, several Wall Street financial institutions that underwrote its loans and securitizations, and its former accountants and lawyers. Mr. Lutsky has acted as a master in other matters in the Commerce Program and also regularly serves as Judge Pro Temp.
In community activities, Mr. Lutsky is a member of the Board of Trustees of The University of the Arts in Philadelphia and a Board and Executive Committee member of the YMCA of Philadelphia & Vicinity. In 2011 he was honored with the Association’s “Volunteer of the Year” award, which recognized Mr. Lutsky for his for his generosity of spirit, hard work and compassion for others. Additionally, Lutsky was elected as vice-chair of the organization. |
