John Murphy


John Murphy focuses his practice on the representation of private clients and federal and state agencies in complex litigation and investigations. He served as chair of the firm’s litigation department from 2005 through 2012 and managed more than 70 attorneys in the firm’s seven offices. He is the founding partner and former partner-in-charge of Stradley Ronon’s Cherry Hill, New Jersey, office and more recently served as an elected member of the firm’s board of directors. John’s experience covers a broad range of commercial litigation, including securities, financial services, professional liability, insurance and commercial real estate matters. He has substantial experience defending claims involving surety and fidelity bonds and flood insurance policies in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and elsewhere. John also has extensive experience trying cases in federal and state courts, and before private arbitrators.

Representative Matters

  • secured an order from the Court of Common Pleas of Delaware County, Pennsylvania on behalf of aggrieved local taxpayers requiring the county to conduct a reassessment of all 202,000 residential and commercial properties in the county due to pervasive inequities in property tax assessments
  • obtained a judgment in the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit affirming a trial court’s dismissal of claims brought by a remediation firm against a flood insurance carrier arising from Hurricane Sandy
  • represented the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Department of General Services in three cases involving the condemnation of three multimillion dollar commercial properties in connection with the expansion of the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia
  • represented broker-dealers and their registered representatives in securities arbitrations, court proceedings and regulatory proceedings throughout the United States 
  • secured multimillion dollar recoveries for the FDIC in its capacity as receiver for failed financial institutions in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania 
  • successfully argued before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in E.P. MedSystems v. Echocath addressing the application of the “bespeaks caution” doctrine under the federal securities laws, which has subsequently been cited in more than 600 federal and state court decisions and in multiple treatises and law review articles
  • represented employers, company officers and employees in cases involving unfair competition, trade secrets, age and race discrimination, and restrictive covenants in the federal and state courts of New Jersey and Pennsylvania
  • represented both regional and national law firms and their attorneys in professional liability actions involving allegations of professional negligence and abuse of process 
  • secured the dismissal of a national franchisor of real estate services in the Superior Court of New Jersey, Burlington County
