Chris Scarpa Discusses ETF Tax Issues During BBD Webinar

PHILADELPHIA – Stradley Ronon Partner Chris Scarpa, along with Jim Kaiser of accounting firm BBD, presented “Custom Baskets in ETFs” at a BBD-hosted webinar. The presentation covered how create-and-redeem transactions work, the role of authorized participants and index providers, tax issues associated with the create-and-redeem process for ETFs, and potential issues relating to capital loss carryforwards resulting from custom baskets. Scarpa focuses his practice on the taxation of comingled funds. He frequently provides advice on the taxation of regulated investment companies, including mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), under Subchapter M of the Internal Revenue Code. He rounds out his practice by advising clients on the taxation of financial products, general corporate tax issues (such as mergers and acquisitions) and investment related international tax issues such as the application of the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) and Chapter 3 withholding (withholding of tax on nonresident aliens and foreign corporations).
