PHILADELPHIA – Stradley Ronon announced today that insurance industry veteran Stephen J. Johnson has joined the firm as an insurance financial and regulatory specialist. Bringing over 30 years’ insurance industry experience to his new role, Johnson will advise clients on insurance transactional, financial and compliance matters, with a focus on regulatory affairs.

Johnson, nationally known for his solvency regulation expertise, was most recently Deputy Insurance Commissioner for the Pennsylvania Insurance Department’s Office of Corporate and Financial Regulation. In that role he oversaw the Bureau of Company Licensing and Financial Analysis and the Bureau of Financial Examinations, which have primary responsibility for carrying out the Department’s financial solvency regulation.

“We are thrilled to add someone of Steve’s caliber to our growing insurance practice,” said Stradley Ronon Chairman William R. Sasso. “His deep knowledge of the changing regulatory landscape will be a great asset to our insurance company clients.”

“Steve has been a major presence in the insurance industry for decades because of his extensive regulatory experience and leadership at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners,” said Steven B. Davis, chair of Stradley Ronon’s insurance practice group and former general counsel of the Pennsylvania Insurance Department. “Our clients will undoubtedly benefit from his perspective and in-depth knowledge of the industry and insurance regulation, both in Pennsylvania and across the country.”

Before becoming Deputy Insurance Commissioner, Johnson was director of the Bureau of Financial Examinations where he oversaw a team of examiners who conducted on-site reviews of the financial health of nearly 275 insurance companies in Pennsylvania. He also worked as chief of the Financial Analysis Division in the Office of Corporate and Financial Regulation, supervising the department’s financial analysts and overseeing the analysis and review of financial statements filed by Pennsylvania’s licensed insurance companies.

“Stradley Ronon is one of the premier firms in the insurance space and I’m excited to work alongside this group of talented attorneys and the firm’s impressive client base,” said Johnson. “My skillset aligns well with the needs of Stradley’s clients, particularly those who are facing business and regulatory hurdles as they look to grow their businesses.”

Johnson has been involved with numerous committees, task forces and financial working groups of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, including the Statutory Accounting Principles Working Group, which he has been involved with since its founding in 1994, and the Financial Analysis Working Group, of which he was appointed chair in 2011. He is also a frequent speaker at insurance industry seminars.

Johnson received his B.S. from Shippensburg University and has been a certified public accountant since 1980.
