NEW YORK — Stradley Ronon partner Randy Friedberg served as a judge for the International Trademark Association (INTA)’s Saul Lefkowitz Moot Court Competition – New York Regional Oral Arguments, held at the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York in Brooklyn.
The annual competition brings together law students from across the region to argue a fictional trademark dispute before panels of experienced practitioners and judges.
During the regional oral arguments, judges preside over two rounds of arguments. Each team argues once as the appellant and once as the appellee, with 20 minutes allotted per side, and the appellant is permitted to reserve up to five minutes for rebuttal under the competition rules.
Judging for the competition is based on a 100-point scale. There were nine different criteria for judging, including coherence and clarity of argument, effectiveness of delivery and ability to engage in a dialogue with the court and knowledge and understanding of relevant precedent, among others.
At the competition, Randy shared practical insights and feedback with participating students, drawing on his decades of experience advising clients on trademark law. In his practice, Randy represents clients from a diverse spectrum of industries, including consumer goods and services, energy, financial services, computer software and hardware and pharmaceutical and biomedical products.
A focus of Randy’s practice is the entertainment and media sector, where he advises advertising and marketing agencies, talent, artists and art galleries on a range of intellectual property matters. In addition to trademark law, Randy also focuses his practice on unfair competition, trade secrets, rights of privacy and publicity, entertainment law, advertising law and internet and cyber issues, as well as general corporate and litigation matters.
