PHILADELPHIA – Stradley Ronon is pleased to announce that nonprofit and religious organizations practice group Co-Chairs Mark E. Chopko and Jennifer A. Gniady recently presented an update on employer and liability issues to attendees at the Resource Center for Religious Institutes’ annual conference.

Chopko’s presentation, “Parsing Liabilities Between Dioceses and Institutes,” offered guidance on anticipating and handling disputes that accuse multiple religious entities of liability. He focused on doctrinal guardrails to identify which entity, in fact, has both the actual authority and control over the source of the claimed misfeasance, ensuring that religious orders and dioceses are not held accountable for actions beyond their ability to control or police.

Gniady’s presentation, entitled “Employers on the Upswing?” discussed challenges employers face and focused on the legal landscape and maintaining a pastoral approach to employment issues. Topics included employment negotiations and agreements that encompass new benefit trends, proposed limits to noncompete provisions, managing long-term virtual and hybrid employees, and compliance issues that require consideration of religious freedom concerns.

Gniady and Chopko co-chair Stradley Ronon’s nonprofit and religious organizations practice group, bringing together more than two dozen lawyers across a broad range of legal disciplines to serve these unique clients.

Gniady has spent more than 15 years counseling nonprofit organizations on how to respond to threats, solve problems and plan for the future. Chopko has extensive experience in untangling the liabilities of complex organizations, in both planning and organizing activities and in litigation. He has represented clients across the world and from Europe to the Pacific Rim.
